The space station Abnego, nominally in a geostationary orbit above Hoontz, the capital and most populous city of Edevane, has the primary function of providing information about phenomena in near-space that might impact (sometimes literally) Edevane or other territories, and a secondary role of deploying the ShieldF as needed to divert or destroy space objects that threaten the planet.
It should be noted that Abnego's armaments and shields were developed and perfected before the existence and nature of the Unplugged Hive were even suspected, much less understood.
The space station was inaugurated with an uninspiring name of random numbers and letters, to avoid unduly raising up or disrespecting any of Edevane's cultural groups. Its current name came into use when the station's crew, possibly affected by cosmic forces not yet understood, denounced the current regional governments of the planet, and, indeed, the notion of government. This abnegation of political power did not at first affect the crew's commitment to carrying out the station's tasks of gathering information and warding off threats, to the best of their ability.
