This is an old revision of the document!

The Atensabel System, named for the earliest known Thropian Matriarch Addelsach Imoprene Atensabel the Unwitty, is the method by which members of the Great Houses of Misan, and many of the inhabitants of the planet Thrope (Churlish System) in general, trace their lineages through generations. It was originally a purely matrilineal system, with names and titles passing from M1 (mother) to D1 (daughter). However, after the Discomforts of the 132nd Year of the Codfish (2177 CR), some male citizens began to track their lineages as well, some matrilineallly, some bilineally, and a handful patrilineally. This has led to a rather confused state regarding family names, official identification papers, lines of inheritance, etc. It is said in Misan, if no where else, “The Old Houses Hold to the Old Ways.”

The Atensabel System developed centuries ago when most records were kept in the form of oral tradition. To simplify memorization of family lines, each first born daughter was given the Name of Honor (her first name) and the Name of House (her last name). She was also given a Name of Calling, which was the only unique part of her designation. For example, Hortensia Perty Catwig the Fifteenth begat three daughters. The eldest she named Hortensia Fortuna Catwig the Sixteenth. The others were simply Tammy and Beth CatwigCatwig, Beth. The Name of Honor was only passed down to the first born daughter.

Men were, in the Old Ways, referred to as Chad, or in some more rural areas, Hank.
